Hurricane & Storm Survival Guide for Central Florida
During the storm
- Stay indoors in an interior room away from windows, on the lowest floor that will not flood
- Do not go outside during the calm of the eye; the back side of the storm is coming
- Keep a radio or weather app on for tornado warnings, which are common in Florida hurricanes
- If water rises, move to a higher floor, never into a closed attic without a way out
Power outages
- Keep fridge and freezer doors closed; food stays cold about 4 hours (fridge) and 48 hours (full freezer)
- Run generators outdoors only, at least 20 feet from doors and windows
- Unplug electronics to protect them from surges when power returns
- Report outages to your utility, and stay far from downed lines
Flooding
- Turn around, don't drown: 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, 12 inches can float a car
- Assume floodwater is contaminated; wear boots and gloves
- Do not use electrical outlets or appliances that got wet until inspected
After the storm
- Photograph all damage before cleanup for insurance
- Make temporary repairs (tarp the roof, board windows) to prevent more damage, and keep receipts
- Watch for scams: get written estimates and confirm licensing before hiring anyone
- Check on neighbors, especially older adults
- Call a trusted pro from your CFL Insiders list for repairs
